Dentures in Buderim
Custom-fitted dentures at Sunny Dental Buderim — full dentures, partial dentures, and implant-retained dentures for patients across the Sunshine Coast. Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins take time to get dentures right, because a poorly fitting denture is worse than none at all.
Types of Dentures
There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to replacing missing teeth with dentures. The right type depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of remaining teeth, your jawbone structure, and your preferences and budget. A consultation at our Buderim practice will help determine what suits you best.
Full Dentures
Full (complete) dentures replace all teeth in an arch. They sit on the gum ridge and are held in position by suction and the contours of the gum and palate. Modern full dentures are significantly more comfortable and natural-looking than older versions. They are an option for patients who have lost all teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures fill the gaps left by missing teeth when some natural teeth remain. They attach to remaining teeth via clasps or precision attachments, restoring chewing function and preventing neighbouring teeth from drifting into the space. Metal-framework partial dentures offer greater durability than acrylic-only options.
Implant-Retained Dentures
For patients who find conventional dentures unstable — particularly lower dentures — implants can be placed in the jawbone to act as anchors. The denture clips onto the implants for a secure fit that significantly improves confidence when eating and speaking. The denture remains removable for cleaning. This option also helps preserve jawbone that otherwise shrinks over time.
The Denture Process at Sunny Dental Buderim
Initial Consultation
Dr Louis or Dr Jeremy examines your gums, remaining teeth (if any), and reviews your jaw relationship. X-rays may be taken. You will discuss the options available and receive a clear treatment plan with costs.
Impressions & Records
Detailed impressions of your gums and remaining teeth are taken. Bite records ensure the upper and lower dentures meet correctly. These records go to the dental laboratory to fabricate your custom denture.
Trial Fitting
A wax trial denture with the proposed teeth is placed in your mouth so you can assess the fit, appearance, and bite. Adjustments are made at this stage — the aim is for you to be completely happy with the look before the final denture is processed.
Delivery & Adjustment
The finished denture is delivered and any minor pressure points are adjusted. Most patients need 1–2 adjustment appointments in the first few weeks as they adapt to the denture. This is normal and included in the process.
Immediate Dentures
An immediate denture is made before your teeth are extracted and placed on the same day as the extractions. This means you are never without teeth during healing. As the gum and bone settle (which causes some shrinkage), the immediate denture may need relining after a few months. Patients from Nambour, Palmview, and Kuluin have benefited from this approach when having multiple extractions.
Caring for Your Dentures
Dentures should be cleaned daily with a soft denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which is abrasive). Remove them at night to give your gums a rest and soak in water or a denture solution. Regular check-ups at our Buderim Village practice allow us to monitor how the denture is fitting as your gums change shape over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between full and partial dentures?
Full dentures replace all teeth in an arch and rest on the gum ridge. Partial dentures replace some missing teeth and clip around remaining natural teeth. Partial dentures prevent remaining teeth from drifting and restore chewing function where teeth are missing.
How long does it take to get dentures made?
Custom dentures typically require 4–6 appointments over several weeks. Impressions are taken, a trial denture is fitted and adjusted, then the final denture is delivered. If you have teeth being removed, an immediate denture can be placed the same day as extraction.
What are implant-retained dentures?
Implant-retained dentures use 2–4 dental implants as anchoring points, providing significantly improved stability — particularly for lower dentures. The denture clips onto the implants but remains removable for cleaning. Implants also prevent the jawbone loss that occurs when teeth roots are absent.
Will my dentures look natural?
Modern dentures use high-quality acrylic and porcelain teeth that mimic natural teeth well. The shade, shape, and size are selected in consultation with you at the trial stage. A well-made, well-fitted denture that suits your face is difficult to distinguish from natural teeth.
How long do dentures last?
With good care, dentures typically last 5–8 years before they need to be replaced or significantly relined. The gum ridge changes shape over time as bone resorbs, which means a denture that fit well when it was made may become loose years later. Regular check-ups allow this to be monitored and relining performed when needed.
My current dentures are loose. What can be done?
A loose denture is a common problem and is usually caused by the gum ridge changing shape after tooth loss. Options include relining the existing denture (adding new material to the fitting surface), making a new denture, or adding implant anchors for improved stability.
