Sedation Dentistry — Level 3

IV Sedation in Buderim

IV sedation at Sunny Dental Buderim is the deepest level of relaxation available in a general dental setting — with a registered nurse on-site throughout your appointment. We are one of the few practices on the Sunshine Coast that can offer IV sedation.

Why IV Sedation Is Rare — and Why That Matters

Most Practices Cannot Offer This

IV sedation in a dental setting requires a registered nurse to be present throughout the procedure — to monitor vital signs, manage the sedation line, and respond to any changes. The vast majority of dental practices across the Sunshine Coast and across Australia do not have this staffing arrangement. They can offer happy gas or oral sedation, but not IV sedation. If you have been told elsewhere that you would need to go to a hospital for deep sedation, it is worth knowing that Sunny Dental Buderim can provide this in our Buderim practice on King Street.

Registered Nurse On-Site

Our registered nurse is present for every IV sedation appointment — not on call, not shared with another procedure, but fully dedicated to monitoring you throughout. They manage the sedation medication, track your vital signs (heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure), and maintain communication with Dr Louis George or Dr Jeremy Collins throughout the procedure. This is the clinical standard that makes IV sedation safe in a dental practice setting.

Twilight Sedation — Deep but Conscious

IV dental sedation is sometimes called "twilight sedation." You are not fully unconscious — you can breathe independently and respond to simple instructions — but most patients feel as though they were completely asleep. The experience is typically described as a blank: you sit in the chair, the cannula goes in, and the next thing you know, it is over. For patients who have been paralysed by dental phobia for years or decades, this is genuinely life-changing.

Complete More in One Visit

Because IV sedation produces deep relaxation and significantly reduces the perception of time, it is often possible to complete more treatment in a single appointment than would otherwise be feasible. For patients who have been avoiding the dentist for years and have a backlog of needed treatment, this can mean fewer appointments overall and a faster path to good oral health.

Who Is IV Sedation For?

IV sedation is not for people who feel mildly nervous — it is the option for patients whose dental anxiety is severe enough that standard care has become genuinely impossible. This includes people who:

  • Have not seen a dentist in five, ten, or even twenty years because of phobia
  • Have a panic response — physical, not just emotional — when they think about dental treatment
  • Found happy gas or oral sedation insufficient in the past
  • Have PTSD or significant trauma responses to clinical settings
  • Are veterans or serving members who have experienced healthcare in high-stress situations
  • Need complex or lengthy treatment (implants, multiple extractions, rehabilitation) in a supported setting

A consultation with Dr Louis or Dr Jeremy — both ex-military veterans with extensive experience treating anxious patients — will help determine whether IV sedation is appropriate and what to expect.

Dentists Who Understand — From Experience

Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins spent their careers in the Australian Defence Force before establishing Sunny Dental Buderim. Military dental services regularly work with personnel who are anxious, who have delayed care, and who may have heightened responses to clinical environments.

That is not a marketing line. It is a practical background that informs how appointments run — the pace, the communication, the genuine absence of judgement about time away from the dentist. The Buderim War Memorial is around the corner from our practice. The veteran community matters to us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IV sedation at the dentist?

IV (intravenous) sedation involves administering a sedative medication directly into the bloodstream via a small cannula. It produces a deep state of relaxation — most patients feel as though they have been asleep and have little or no memory of the procedure. You remain technically conscious and breathe independently, but you are deeply calm and largely unaware of your surroundings. Our registered nurse monitors you throughout.

Why is IV sedation rare at dental practices?

IV sedation requires a registered nurse to be present throughout to monitor vital signs and manage the sedation. Most dental practices do not have this arrangement and can only offer happy gas or oral sedation. Sunny Dental Buderim is one of the few practices on the Sunshine Coast equipped to provide IV sedation in a general dental setting.

Will I be asleep during IV sedation?

IV dental sedation is sometimes called "twilight sedation" — you are not fully unconscious as you would be under general anaesthesia, but most patients feel as though they were asleep. You can breathe independently and respond to simple instructions, but you will have little or no memory of the appointment.

How do I prepare for IV sedation?

You will need to fast for at least six hours before your appointment. Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours afterwards. Wear loose, comfortable clothing with easy arm access, and avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. Full written instructions will be provided at your consultation.

Is IV sedation covered by health insurance or DVA?

Coverage varies depending on your insurer and level of cover. DVA patients should discuss their entitlements with our team — we are experienced in working with DVA and the veteran community. We will always provide a written cost estimate and discuss funding options before proceeding. Please call (07) 5445 8400 for current fee information.

Is IV sedation the same as general anaesthesia?

No. General anaesthesia renders you fully unconscious and requires a specialist anaesthetist and a hospital setting. IV dental sedation produces a deep state of relaxation (twilight state) where you remain conscious and breathe independently. It is performed safely in our Buderim practice with our registered nurse on-site, and recovery is typically much faster than from a general anaesthetic.

You Do Not Have to Keep Putting It Off

Sunny Dental Buderim is one of the few practices on the Sunshine Coast offering IV sedation with a registered nurse on-site. If dental phobia has been keeping you away — for months, years, or decades — we can help. Call us or book a consultation today. Open Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:30pm.
