Comfort for Every Patient
Sedation Dentistry in Buderim
Sedation dentistry at Sunny Dental Buderim offers three tiers — happy gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation — with a Registered Nurse monitoring every procedure on-site. Whether you’re anxious, need a long procedure, or prefer a more relaxed experience, we have an option for you.
Who Benefits From Sedation?
Sedation is associated with dental anxiety — and it absolutely helps with that. But there are many practical reasons to consider sedation for your next appointment, regardless of how you feel about visiting the dentist.
Anxious Patients
Sedation takes the edge off so you can receive the care you may have been putting off. Dr Louis and Dr Jeremy have spent most of their careers helping anxious patients across the Sunshine Coast.
Long or Complex Procedures
Implant placement, wisdom tooth removal, or full mouth rehabilitation — sedation makes lengthy procedures feel as though they pass in minutes.
Strong Gag Reflex
A sensitive gag reflex can make even routine dental work difficult. Sedation suppresses this reflex, making treatment more manageable and comfortable for everyone involved.
Multiple Treatments in One Visit
Rather than spreading treatment across five appointments, sedation lets us complete more in a single session — saving time and repeat travel from across the Sunshine Coast.
Patients Who Prefer It
You don’t need a clinical reason. Some patients simply prefer not to be fully aware during dental work, and that’s a perfectly valid choice. We’re here to help you get the care you need in the way that suits you.
Three Tiers of Sedation
We offer three levels of sedation so we can match the right option to your needs. Dr Louis or Dr Jeremy will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your procedure, health, and comfort level.
Happy Gas (Nitrous Oxide)
A mild sedative inhaled through a small mask over your nose. Creates a warm, relaxed feeling within minutes. You remain fully conscious throughout. Learn more on our happy gas page.
- Takes effect in 2–3 minutes
- Wears off within minutes after removal
- You can drive yourself home afterwards
- Suitable for mild anxiety or shorter procedures
Oral Sedation
A prescription tablet taken before your appointment to reduce anxiety significantly. You’ll feel deeply relaxed and drowsy while remaining conscious. Many patients have little memory of the procedure. More on our oral sedation page.
- Taken 30–60 minutes before your appointment
- You will need someone to drive you home
- Effects last several hours after the appointment
- Suitable for moderate anxiety or longer procedures
IV Sedation
Administered intravenously for the deepest level of conscious sedation we offer. You’ll be in a twilight state — deeply relaxed, responsive, but unlikely to remember the procedure. More detail on our IV sedation page.
- Takes effect almost immediately
- Most amnesic — little to no memory of treatment
- You will need an escort home
- Dwi George BSc (Registered Nurse) monitors throughout
Registered Nurse On-Site for Every Sedation Procedure
This is not standard at most dental practices in the Sunshine Coast
At Sunny Dental Buderim, every sedation procedure is monitored by Dwi George BSc, our Registered Nurse and Practice Manager. She tracks your heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and blood pressure continuously from the moment sedation begins to the moment you’re ready to go home.
Most dental practices don’t have a Registered Nurse on staff. Having Dwi present is an additional layer of safety that allows Dr Louis and Dr Jeremy to focus entirely on treatment while your wellbeing is separately monitored.
Dr Louis (ex-Royal Navy) and Dr Jeremy (ex-Australian Army) bring a calm, composed approach to clinical care — qualities that come through in how sedation appointments are conducted at our Buderim practice.
Is Dental Anxiety Your Main Concern?
Sedation is one of the tools we use to help anxious patients — but it’s not the only one. Our anxious patients page covers the full approach: the pace, the communication, the stop signal, and the environment that makes Sunny Dental Buderim a practice where nervous patients feel genuinely comfortable.

Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. All sedation at Sunny Dental is administered by qualified dentists and monitored throughout by Dwi George BSc, our Registered Nurse. Your vital signs — heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure — are tracked continuously from start to finish. Both Dr Louis and Dr Jeremy have ex-military backgrounds, bringing an additional level of composure and discipline to sedation appointments.
Will I be completely unconscious?
No. All three sedation options — happy gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation — are forms of conscious sedation. You remain responsive and can communicate with the dental team. With IV sedation, you’ll be deeply relaxed and unlikely to remember much of the procedure, but you remain breathing on your own and can respond if needed.
Can I drive home after sedation?
With happy gas (nitrous oxide), yes — it wears off within minutes and you can drive. With oral sedation or IV sedation, you will need someone to drive you home and ideally remain with you for the rest of the day. We provide clear pre-appointment instructions so arrangements are made in advance.
Is sedation only for anxious patients?
Not at all. Sedation is equally useful for long procedures, strong gag reflexes, multiple treatments in one visit, and patients who simply prefer a more relaxed experience. Many patients from Buderim, Sippy Downs, and Maroochydore choose sedation for practical reasons rather than anxiety.
How much does sedation cost?
Sedation is an additional fee on top of your treatment cost. The amount depends on the type of sedation and the length of your appointment. We always discuss fees upfront during your consultation — no surprises on the day.
What if I have a medical condition?
A thorough medical history review is conducted before recommending any sedation. Certain conditions or medications may influence which option is most appropriate, or whether sedation is suitable. This is precisely why the consultation step exists — your safety always comes first.
All dental treatments carry risks. Outcomes vary between individuals. The information on this website is general in nature and does not replace personalised advice. A consultation with a registered dental practitioner is necessary to assess your individual needs. Sedation options are subject to medical suitability assessment.
Dental Care Doesn’t Have to Be Stressful
Whether it’s anxiety, a complex procedure, or you simply want to be more comfortable — we have a sedation option that fits.
