Sedation Dentistry — Level 1
Happy Gas (Nitrous Oxide) in Buderim
Happy gas (nitrous oxide) sedation at Sunny Dental Buderim is available for patients of all ages — children who feel nervous, adults who dread the chair, and anyone who wants a calmer experience. You stay awake and in control, and the effect wears off in minutes.
What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
How It Works
Nitrous oxide — commonly called happy gas — is a colourless, odourless gas mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small nose mask. Within a few minutes of breathing it in, most patients notice a pleasant warmth and a sense of calm. Worries ease, time seems to pass faster, and the sounds of the dental practice fade into the background. You remain awake and can talk to your dentist at any time.
What You Can Expect
Before we begin, your dentist will take your medical history and explain the process. Once the mask is placed comfortably on your nose, you breathe normally and the effect begins gently. Your dentist controls the level of nitrous oxide throughout the appointment. When treatment is complete, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the gas, and the effect wears off quickly — usually before you leave the chair.
Safe for Kids and Adults
Happy gas has a long history of safe use in dentistry for patients of all ages. It is one of the most common approaches for helping children who feel nervous about dental visits, and it is equally effective for adults who experience mild to moderate anxiety. Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins — both experienced in treating anxious patients — will tailor the level to your comfort throughout.
No Driver Required
Unlike oral sedation or IV sedation, nitrous oxide clears your system quickly — you can typically drive yourself home and return to normal activities the same day. This makes happy gas a practical choice for busy patients from Sippy Downs, Mountain Creek, Maroochydore, and surrounding Sunshine Coast suburbs who cannot easily arrange a lift.
Three Levels of Sedation — All Available in Buderim
Happy gas is our Level 1 sedation option. For patients who need more reassurance, we also offer oral sedation (Level 2) and IV sedation with a registered nurse on-site (Level 3) — all at Sunny Dental Buderim on King Street.
Happy Gas
Mild relaxation via nitrous oxide. Stays awake, wears off quickly, can drive home. Suitable for children and adults with mild anxiety.
Oral Sedation
A prescribed tablet taken before your appointment. Produces deeper relaxation for moderate anxiety. A driver is required.
IV Sedation
Deep sedation administered intravenously by our registered nurse on-site. For severe anxiety or complex treatment. A driver is required.

Dentists Who Genuinely Understand Anxiety
Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins are both ex-military veterans who spent much of their careers helping patients who were anxious, phobic, or who had avoided dental care for years. They understand what it feels like to walk through the door of a dental practice when every part of you would rather not.
That background informs how every appointment at Sunny Dental Buderim runs — from the pace of conversations to the way treatment is explained before anything begins. Happy gas is one tool in a broader approach to making dental care genuinely accessible to people who have found it difficult in the past.
Whether you are coming from Buderim Village, Nambour, Kuluin, or anywhere across the Sunshine Coast, you are welcome here — however long it has been and however anxious you feel.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does happy gas feel like?
Most patients describe a feeling of warmth, lightness, and calm — worries fade into the background and the appointment seems to pass faster. You remain fully awake and aware throughout, and the effect wears off within minutes of removing the mask.
Is happy gas safe for children?
Yes. Nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record in children when administered correctly. It is commonly used for nervous children or those who need to remain still during treatment. Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins are experienced in using happy gas for younger patients and will take the time to explain everything before the mask goes on.
Can I drive home after happy gas?
Yes — this is one of happy gas's key advantages over other sedation options. Nitrous oxide clears your system within minutes of stopping, and most patients feel completely back to normal before leaving the practice. No driver is needed.
Is happy gas suitable for everyone?
Nitrous oxide is suitable for most patients, but it is not recommended for those with certain respiratory conditions, vitamin B12 deficiency, or during the first trimester of pregnancy. Your dentist will review your medical history at the consultation and confirm it is appropriate for you. If happy gas is not suitable, oral or IV sedation may be alternatives worth exploring.
Does it cost more to have happy gas?
There is typically an additional fee for nitrous oxide sedation, as it involves specialised equipment and monitoring throughout your appointment. We will always provide a written cost estimate before your appointment so there are no surprises. Please call us on (07) 5445 8400 for current fee information.
Do I need to fast before having happy gas?
For nitrous oxide sedation alone, fasting is not usually required. However, some patients find it more comfortable to avoid a heavy meal in the two hours before the appointment. We will provide specific preparation instructions when you book. Fasting requirements are different for oral and IV sedation.
