Tooth Extractions in Buderim
Tooth extractions at Sunny Dental Buderim — simple and surgical extractions performed with a gentle, unhurried approach when a tooth cannot be saved due to severe decay, fracture, infection, or overcrowding. Sedation available for anxious patients.
When Is Extraction Necessary?
We always explore whether a tooth can be saved before recommending extraction. Root canal treatment, crowns, and other restorative options are considered first. Extraction is recommended when the tooth is too damaged to restore, poses a risk of infection to surrounding structures, or when it is creating problems for the adjacent teeth.
Severe Decay or Fracture
When decay has destroyed too much tooth structure to support a restoration, or when a tooth has cracked below the gum line, extraction may be the only option. Your dentist will confirm this with X-rays before proceeding.
Infection
A dental abscess that cannot be resolved with root canal treatment or antibiotics may require extraction to eliminate the infection source. Spreading dental infections can occasionally become serious — prompt treatment is important.
Orthodontic & Crowding
Sometimes teeth are removed to create space for orthodontic treatment, or because a tooth is in a position that cannot be corrected. Wisdom teeth are also commonly extracted when they are impacted or causing problems for adjacent teeth.
Simple and Surgical Extractions
Simple Extraction
A simple extraction is performed on teeth that are fully visible above the gum line. After numbing the area with local anaesthetic, the dentist loosens the tooth with a dental instrument called an elevator, then removes it with forceps. The whole process is typically quick. Most patients from Buderim Mountain, Mountain Creek, and Sippy Downs are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward it is.
Surgical Extraction
A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is impacted, broken off at the gum line, or has an unusual root shape. A small incision is made in the gum to access the tooth, and the tooth may be divided into sections to facilitate removal. Stitches are placed to close the gum and aid healing. This sounds more involved than it is — with sedation available, most patients manage well.
Sedation Options for Extractions
Anxiety about extractions is completely understandable. At Sunny Dental, Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins offer three levels of sedation to make extractions manageable for patients of all anxiety levels. Both dentists have spent the majority of their careers working with anxious patients — you are in experienced hands.
Inhaled nitrous oxide produces a relaxed, slightly euphoric state while you remain conscious and responsive. Wears off quickly after removal of the mask.
A sedative tablet taken before your appointment produces deeper relaxation. You remain conscious but are significantly more at ease. You will need a driver.
Administered by a registered nurse, IV sedation produces a deeply relaxed state. Many patients have little or no memory of the procedure. Requires a driver and carer for the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is tooth extraction painful?
The extraction is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain — you will feel pressure and movement, which is normal. Post-operative discomfort for 1–3 days is expected and is typically managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Sedation options are available for anxious patients at Sunny Dental Buderim.
What is the difference between a simple and surgical extraction?
A simple extraction applies to fully erupted teeth that can be removed without cutting the gum. A surgical extraction is necessary when the tooth is impacted, broken at the gum line, or has roots that complicate removal. Both are performed under local anaesthesia and both can be done with sedation at Sunny Dental.
What should I avoid after a tooth extraction?
For the first 24 hours: avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, vigorous rinsing, and strenuous exercise. These activities can dislodge the blood clot forming in the socket — a complication called dry socket that causes significant pain. Follow the post-operative instructions provided by our team at Buderim.
Do I need to replace an extracted tooth?
It depends on the position of the tooth. Removing a tooth without replacing it can allow neighbouring teeth to drift, affect your bite, and cause jawbone loss over time. Your dentist will discuss replacement options — implants, bridges, partial dentures — at the time of extraction or at a follow-up appointment.
How long does healing take after extraction?
The gum tissue typically closes over within 1–2 weeks. The underlying bone takes longer to fully remodel — several months in some cases. Most patients resume normal eating and activity within a few days of a simple extraction. Surgical extractions may require a longer recovery.
What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot in the extraction socket is dislodged before healing is complete, exposing the underlying bone. It is the most common complication of tooth extraction and causes significant pain, usually appearing 3–4 days after the procedure. Avoiding smoking, straws, and vigorous rinsing in the first 24 hours are the main preventive measures. If you develop unusual pain after an extraction, contact our Buderim practice on (07) 5445 8400.
