Children’s Dentistry in Buderim
Children’s dentistry at Sunny Dental Buderim welcomes children of all ages for gentle check-ups, preventive treatments, and positive first dental experiences. Our aim is simple: help children grow up comfortable at the dentist so they carry good habits for life.
Why Early Dental Visits Matter
Baby teeth matter — they hold space for adult teeth, help with speech development, and allow children to chew comfortably. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain, infection, and affect how the permanent teeth develop. Starting dental visits early means problems are caught before they become serious.
First Dental Visits
We recommend a child’s first visit around their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing. These early visits are gentle and exploratory — often just a look in the mouth, a ride in the dental chair, and a count of the teeth. No drills, no needles. The goal is building familiarity and trust so that dentistry never feels frightening.
Check-Ups & Cleans
Regular six-monthly check-ups allow Dr Louis or Dr Jeremy to monitor how your child’s teeth and jaws are developing, catch early decay, and give parents practical advice on brushing techniques, diet, and fluoride use. A gentle clean removes plaque and tartar that daily brushing misses. Families from Sippy Downs near UniSC, Mountain Creek, and Maroochydore regularly bring their children to our Buderim practice.
Fissure Sealants
The back molars have deep grooves on their chewing surfaces that are difficult to clean and highly prone to decay. Fissure sealants are thin protective coatings that fill these grooves, creating a smooth surface that is much easier to keep clean. Application is quick and painless — no drilling required. We typically recommend sealants as permanent molars erupt, usually between ages 6 and 12.
Fluoride Treatments
Professional fluoride varnish is applied directly to the teeth at the end of a check-up appointment. Fluoride strengthens enamel and makes teeth more resistant to acid attack from bacteria and dietary sugars. It is particularly recommended for children at higher risk of decay. The varnish is set quickly and your child can eat and drink normally shortly afterwards.
A Gentle Approach for Anxious Children
Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins are both experienced in treating anxious patients — including children who are nervous, have had a difficult experience elsewhere, or simply do not know what to expect. We go at your child’s pace. Happy gas (nitrous oxide sedation) is available for children who need extra support during treatment. We never force, rush, or dismiss a child’s anxiety.
Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule provides Medicare-funded dental services for eligible children aged 2–17. This covers a range of preventive and basic dental treatments including check-ups, cleans, fissure sealants, fillings, and extractions. Ask our reception team about eligibility when you book.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should my child first visit the dentist?
The Australian Dental Association recommends a child’s first dental visit around their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. Early visits help your child become familiar with the dental environment before any treatment is needed, and allow the dentist to check that teeth and jaws are developing normally.
What are fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. These surfaces have natural grooves that trap food and bacteria, making them prone to decay. Sealants fill these grooves to create a smooth, easier-to-clean surface. The application is quick, painless, and does not require drilling.
Is fluoride treatment safe for children?
Yes. Professionally applied fluoride varnish is considered safe and is recommended as a preventive measure for children at risk of decay. The concentration used in professional treatments is higher than in fluoride toothpaste but is applied in small amounts and sets quickly. Your dentist will assess whether fluoride treatment is appropriate for your child’s age and decay risk.
My child is anxious about the dentist. How do you handle this?
We take a gentle, unhurried approach with children who are nervous. The first visit for young or anxious children often involves simply exploring the dental chair and equipment together — no treatment, just familiarity. Happy gas is available for children who need extra support. Dr Louis and Dr Jeremy both have significant experience with anxious patients of all ages.
How often should children visit the dentist?
For most children, six-monthly check-ups are recommended. Children at higher risk of decay — due to diet, brushing habits, or past decay history — may benefit from more frequent appointments. Your dentist will advise on the right schedule for your child during the check-up.
Do you bulk bill under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?
Please contact our Buderim practice on (07) 5445 8400 to discuss CDBS billing arrangements. Our reception team can check your child’s eligibility and explain what is covered under the scheme before your appointment.
