When Do Wisdom Teeth Cause Problems?
Most people have four wisdom teeth, which typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Because modern jaws are often smaller than our ancestors’, these teeth frequently do not have enough room to erupt cleanly — leading to impaction, crowding, infection, or cyst formation.
Impaction
An impacted wisdom tooth is one that cannot fully emerge through the gum. It may be angled sideways, grow towards the adjacent molar, or remain partially below the gumline. Impaction often leads to pain, swelling, and infection of the surrounding gum tissue (pericoronitis).
Infection & Decay
Partially erupted wisdom teeth are difficult to clean properly. Food and bacteria collect in the flap of gum overlying the tooth, leading to infection. Decay can also develop on the wisdom tooth itself or on the neighbouring second molar if left untreated.
Crowding & Cysts
In some cases, pressure from wisdom teeth can push on adjacent teeth. Occasionally, a fluid-filled cyst can form around an impacted tooth — damaging nearby teeth and jawbone if left undetected. Regular X-rays as part of your check-up allow us to monitor wisdom teeth over time.
Assessment & Treatment at Sunny Dental Buderim
Assessment First
Not every wisdom tooth needs immediate removal. Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins will take X-rays and assess the position, angulation, and relationship to surrounding teeth and nerves. You will receive a clear recommendation — remove now, monitor, or leave alone — with the reasoning explained.
Simple vs Surgical Extraction
Simple extractions apply to wisdom teeth that have fully erupted and can be removed without cutting the gum. Surgical extractions are needed for impacted teeth — a small incision is made in the gum and the tooth may be sectioned for easier removal. Both procedures are performed under local anaesthesia at our Buderim practice.
Sedation Options
We know that wisdom tooth surgery can feel daunting. Sunny Dental offers happy gas (nitrous oxide), oral sedation, and IV sedation with a registered nurse on-site. Sedation is particularly popular with patients having multiple wisdom teeth removed at once, or with those who experience significant dental anxiety. Patients from Sippy Downs, Kuluin, Forest Glen, and Nambour regularly come to us for sedation-assisted wisdom tooth procedures.
Recovery & Aftercare
You will receive detailed aftercare instructions before leaving the practice. Expect some swelling and discomfort for 2–5 days — cold packs and over-the-counter pain relief manage most of this well. Soft foods, no straws, and avoiding vigorous rinsing for 24 hours are standard advice. Most patients return to normal activities within a week.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
Not necessarily. Some wisdom teeth erupt fully, are positioned correctly, and can be cleaned and maintained without any problems. Others become impacted and may cause pain, infection, crowding, or damage to neighbouring teeth. A dental X-ray and assessment will help determine whether removal is recommended in your situation.
Is wisdom tooth removal painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the extraction — some pressure and movement is normal. Post-operative soreness for 2–5 days is common and is usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Sedation options are available for patients who are anxious about the procedure.
What is the recovery like after wisdom tooth removal?
Most patients experience swelling and discomfort for 2–5 days after removal. Soft foods, cold packs applied to the face, and pain relief help manage recovery. You will be given detailed post-operative instructions before you leave. Most people return to normal activity within a week.
What is a surgical extraction?
A surgical extraction is required when a wisdom tooth is impacted — partially or fully below the gum line, or positioned at an angle. The dentist makes a small incision in the gum to access the tooth, which may be divided into sections for easier removal. With sedation available, most patients find it very manageable.
Can I have all four wisdom teeth removed at once?
Yes — removing all four in one session is common when all require extraction. IV sedation is particularly useful in this situation as you will be relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure, and you only need one recovery period. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the day.
How do I know if my wisdom teeth need attention?
Symptoms like pain or pressure at the back of the jaw, swelling of the gum behind the last molar, difficulty opening your mouth, or bad taste or smell near the back teeth may indicate a problem. However, impacted wisdom teeth can also be asymptomatic — which is why monitoring them with X-rays at routine check-ups is important. Call our Buderim practice on (07) 5445 8400 if you have concerns.
