Sedation Dentistry — Level 2
Oral Sedation in Buderim
Oral sedation at Sunny Dental Buderim offers a deeper level of relaxation through a prescribed tablet taken before your appointment. Our experienced dentists have helped many anxious patients finally get the care they have been putting off — comfortably and at their own pace.
What Is Oral Sedation?
A Tablet, Not a Needle
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative tablet — usually in the benzodiazepine family — before your appointment. There are no injections involved in the sedation itself (local anaesthetic may still be used for numbing, but many patients find this far less confronting when already relaxed). For patients who are anxious about needles or the idea of intravenous sedation, oral sedation can be a reassuring middle step.
How You Will Feel
The tablet is typically taken one hour before your appointment. By the time you arrive at our King Street, Buderim practice, you will be feeling noticeably calmer and drowsier. During treatment, most patients are aware of what is happening but feel deeply relaxed, unconcerned, and — importantly — find that time seems to pass very quickly. Many have partial or no memory of the appointment.
Suitable for Moderate Anxiety
Oral sedation sits between happy gas (Level 1) and IV sedation (Level 3) in terms of depth of effect. It is particularly suited to patients who experience moderate anxiety — those who are not just a little nervous, but who actively avoid dental care, have physical stress symptoms at the thought of an appointment, or have had distressing dental experiences in the past. If you are unsure where your anxiety sits on this scale, a consultation with Dr Louis George or Dr Jeremy Collins can help clarify the right approach.
A Driver Is Required
The effects of oral sedation last several hours after your appointment. You must arrange a responsible adult to drive you home and, ideally, stay with you for a few hours afterwards. Driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions on the day of your appointment is not safe. We will provide written pre- and post-appointment instructions tailored to your specific medication when you book.
Dentists Who Have Spent Their Careers Helping Anxious Patients
Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins are both ex-military veterans. Military dental services often serve patients in challenging circumstances — personnel who may have delayed care while on deployment, who have strong responses to clinical environments, or who simply have not had access to gentle, patient-centred dentistry.
That professional history means both dentists have a deep familiarity with dental anxiety that is practical, not theoretical. They have helped patients overcome fears that span decades, and they approach sedation as one part of a broader commitment to making dental care genuinely accessible — not a last resort, but a considered tool.
The practice also holds regular sedation consultations where you can meet the dentist, discuss your history, and agree on an approach before any treatment begins. You never have to commit to anything on the first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative tablet before your dental appointment. It produces a deeper level of relaxation than happy gas — most patients feel drowsy, calm, and largely unaware of time passing, while remaining conscious and able to respond to the dentist.
How is oral sedation different from IV sedation?
Oral sedation is taken as a tablet and produces moderate relaxation. IV sedation is administered intravenously and produces a deeper, near-sleep state with our registered nurse monitoring you throughout. Oral sedation is a good middle-ground for patients who need more than happy gas but do not require the depth of IV sedation.
Will I remember the appointment?
Many patients have little or no memory of the procedure — oral sedation often produces a degree of amnesia. This can be one of its most appreciated benefits for patients with past traumatic dental experiences. The extent varies between individuals and depends on the medication and dose prescribed.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
Yes — a responsible adult must drive you home and ideally stay with you for a few hours after the appointment. The sedative effects last several hours, and driving or making important decisions on the day is not safe. Please arrange this before booking.
Do I need to fast beforehand?
Fasting requirements for oral sedation vary depending on the specific medication prescribed. We will give you clear written instructions when you book. Generally, a light meal a few hours before is acceptable, but heavy meals and alcohol should be avoided. We will confirm the specifics during your consultation.
Is oral sedation available for DVA patients?
We welcome DVA patients at Sunny Dental Buderim, and our team is experienced in working with veterans. Please contact us to discuss your DVA entitlements and whether sedation is covered under your treatment plan. Dr Louis George and Dr Jeremy Collins both have a genuine appreciation for the needs of the veteran community across the Sunshine Coast.
