The phrase “smile makeover” gets used loosely — sometimes for a single crown, sometimes for a full set of veneers, sometimes just for whitening. That looseness causes confusion, because it isn’t one procedure at all. It’s a plan, built around what you specifically want to change, that might draw on several different treatments to get there.
That distinction matters more than it sounds like it should. A plan built around your goals looks very different from a plan built around what’s easiest to sell. At Sunny Dental Buderim, we start with the first question and let the treatment list follow from the answer — not the other way around.
A Smile Makeover Is a Plan, Not a Product
There’s no fixed package. Depending on what you want to change and what your teeth actually need, a smile makeover might include any combination of:
- Teeth whitening — brightening teeth that have darkened over years of tea, coffee, red wine, or simply age. Usually the first step, since any restorative work done afterwards can be colour-matched to the new, lighter shade.
- Porcelain veneers — thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of teeth to change shape, colour, or alignment, where the underlying tooth is structurally sound.
- Crowns — used where a tooth has cosmetic concerns but also needs structural support, such as old discoloured fillings, cracks, or significant wear.
- Invisalign — where crowding or spacing is part of what’s bothering you, straightening the teeth first often reduces how much cosmetic work is needed afterwards.
- Dental implants — where one or more missing teeth are affecting both function and appearance.
Some patients need one item from that list. Others need three or four, sequenced in a particular order. The point isn’t to work through a menu — it’s to identify the smallest, most conservative combination that actually achieves what you’re after.
It Starts With What You Want to Change
This is the part that gets skipped in a lot of cosmetic consultations, and it’s the part we treat as the actual starting point.
“I want whiter teeth” and “I want to stop covering my mouth when I laugh” can point to very different treatment plans, even though they sound related. The first might be solved with a single whitening course. The second might involve a chipped front tooth, a gap you’ve had since your twenties, or a shade mismatch between an old crown and your natural teeth — each of which needs a different answer.
At your consultation with Dr Louis George or Dr Jeremy Collins, that’s where we begin: what specifically do you notice when you look in the mirror, or when you see photos of yourself? From there, we look at your teeth, your bite, and your gums to work out which options are realistic and which would be overkill. If whitening and a small amount of composite bonding would get you most of the way there, we’ll say so — a full set of veneers isn’t the answer just because it’s the more dramatic one.
When It’s More Than Cosmetic: The Full Mouth Rehabilitation Connection
Some patients come in asking about a smile makeover and discover, once we’ve had a proper look, that the issue isn’t purely cosmetic. Cracked teeth, heavily worn enamel, failing old fillings, or missing back teeth affecting your bite are structural problems — and a cosmetic fix layered on top of an unaddressed structural one won’t hold up.
In those cases, the conversation shifts toward full mouth rehabilitation — a more comprehensive plan that restores function first, with the cosmetic improvement built in as part of the result rather than bolted on afterward. It isn’t a bigger sales pitch. It’s simply a more accurate description of what your teeth need, and we’ll always tell you plainly which category your situation falls into.
Buderim Patients Who’ve Put This Off for Years
We see this pattern often in Buderim: someone who has quietly disliked their smile for a decade or two, has put off doing anything about it, and finally decides it’s time. Buderim has a substantial retiree population — more than a third of the suburb is aged 55 and over — and for a lot of these patients, the hesitation isn’t really about the teeth. It’s about assuming the process will be uncomfortable, drawn-out, or embarrassing to bring up at their age.
None of those are good reasons to keep putting it off. There’s no upper age limit on cosmetic treatment, and the same options are available whether you’re 40 or 80 — the difference is in matching the plan to your goals and to the condition of your teeth today. For patients who feel anxious about longer cosmetic appointments, it’s worth knowing that our Practice Manager, Dwi George BSc, is a Registered Nurse who supports sedation appointments on-site — a resource most general practices in the region don’t have in-house.
We also see plenty of patients from further afield — Mooloolaba, Sippy Downs, Mountain Creek, and Forest Glen — who’ve asked around locally and ended up at our King Street practice for the same conversation. Whether you’ve lived in Buderim your whole life or moved to the Sunshine Coast for retirement, the approach doesn’t change.
What Happens at a Smile Makeover Consultation
If you book in to discuss cosmetic options, here’s roughly what to expect:
- We listen first. What specifically do you want to change, and why does it matter to you?
- We assess your teeth properly — structurally and cosmetically, including your bite and how your teeth meet, since that affects how long any cosmetic work will last.
- We map out realistic options, from the simplest to the most involved, and explain the trade-offs of each — cost, how long it takes, how long it lasts, and how much natural tooth structure is affected.
- We give you an honest recommendation, including telling you when a simpler option would get you most of the way there.
There’s no obligation to proceed with anything at that first conversation, and no pressure to choose the most extensive option on the list.
